It was initially accessible for Harvard students only, but slowly and gradually it was spread all across America and then it conquered the whole world. Facebook has 800million active users. It is the most used social site presently. The credit goes to its easy approach, great privacy options and the ability to make effective interactive groups.

The next big site is Twitter. It was made by a team which has software masterminds like Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams. It gained popularity rapidly and by 2011 it has 300 million users of different regions and ethnic backgrounds. It allows users to make text based messages as long as 140 characters, they are called tweets. The users can follow or could be followed. It is used by many celebrities to get in touch with their fans.

This site is designed by Google as the name implies. It was launched in June. It had a lot of hype prior to its launch. It gives some features different features than Facebook. Google+ was thought to be a threat to Facebook, but nothing of that sort has come up. It has 40 million active users in the world.

It is the next most used social site although it is not really used in comparison of the top sites mentioned. It just has 34 million users. The site was, however, enjoyed the supreme position in the world of social sites from 2005 to 2008. After that its rating declined slowly and gradually due to the blossoming of Facebook. It had several redesigns but this could not stop it from demise. MySpace is owned by Specific Media LLC and Justin Timberlake.
