Services by Google Maps
Google maps which was formerly known as Google Local is an application and technology which is provided by Google to its users totally free of cost. It provides many map-based services like Google Ride Finder, Google Transit and also the maps present on other websites. Google Maps also facilitate its users by providing a route planner for travelling by car, bike or even by foot.
Google Maps provides satellite images of excellent quality. However, not all areas are covered in same resolution. Less populated or small areas usually have a less detailed image.
Google Maps uses JavaScript. As the map is dragged, the grid squares are downloaded and inserted into the page.
In the year 2006, Google introduced Google Maps for mobile users as a Java application. It provides a GPS-like location service but it does not require a GPS receiver.

- Palm OS
Google Biking Directions
On 10th March, 2010, Google added the facility of biking directions on Google Maps. Routes are calculated according to traffic, bike paths, lanes etc. This service is available in the US and Canada.
Google My Maps
In the year 2007, Google added a new feature of My Maps to Google Maps. It allows user to create their own map by adding positioning markers, polylines etc in a map.
Google Street View
On 25th May, 2007 a new feature of Google Maps, Street View was introduced which provides a street-level view of thousands of locations around the world.
